Milestone 0 Worksheets

This is the cover page from our very first design studio meeting working on project 1. For our Team Portrait, we tried to create a human windmill in reference to our project 1 goal.

This is our team charter where we split up specific team member responsibilities among the 4 of us to work as efficiently and collaboratively as possible.

This is the Preliminary Gantt Chart created by the Team Manager (me!). This was used to help keep us on track over the duration of the project.

Milestone 1 Worksheets

Prior to this design studio, we were asked to complete individual research memos consisting of both the current state of wind turbine technology and specific design factors we may need to take into consideration.

Milestone 2 Worksheets

In this design studio, we created a refined problem statement in relation to the specific scenario we were assigned - The Engineers Without Borders Humanitarian Aid Mission.

We then also created a refined objective tree for our wind turbine blade.

We then generated metrics to evaluate the objectives of the turbine blade based on the assigned scenario.

Milestone 3b Worksheets

The first thing we did in this design studio was estimate the maximum deflection of the blade by using the deflection formula of a cantilever beam with a elliptical geometry.

Then we created a CAD Turbine Blade in Autodesk Inventor 2021.

After the blade was done being designed, we performed a deflection simulation on it for the material brass.

Milestone 3a Worksheets

In this lab, we decided on our primary and secondary objectives we would like to achieve.

After deciding on the two objectives in terms of MPI stiffness and strength, we each tested one of the chosen MPI and ranked the top 5 materials.

We ended up choosing bamboo for our final selection and wrote a justification why it was the best material for this particular scenario.

Milestone 4 Worksheets

As thickness is a functional constraint, in this final design studio, we first tried to estimate what thickness our turbine blade should be. We did this by each taking on a thickness to try and find what range our goal thickness should be.

In this design studio we also got the chance to hear from another group about what they were doing in their assigned scenario. This is the reflection we wrote on that afterwards.
