Project 3 - There's a Recyclable Among Us: Design a System for Sorting and Recycling Containers

In this project, our team designed a system for sorting and recycling a variety of containers with varying materials. We did this by designing a computer program that is able to control the movement of both a robotic arm and a robot. We then specifically programmed it to drop each container into its respective recycling bin using data from the physical environment, by analyzing it for contamination, and successfully transferring it in the end. Additionally, we designed and prototyped a recycling hopper - a device that is mounted onto the base plate of the robot - that is used to deposit the containers into the recycling bins securely.

Through this project, we were introduced to the principles of smart devices and assembly modelling. We also had the chance to integrate the digital and physical elements of the design to showcase our results and demonstrate functionality of the entire system during a Design Expo.
